Personal Story About Weather at a Wedding

I got married two years ago on a pier at my mother's beach house on the shore of Virginia. The idea to get married outside came about when my husband and I were trying to find a place and my aging grandmother offered her house. We had spent many weeks there together as a family and then together with my fiancé before we were married.

The beach to us symbolizes the depth and expansiveness of the earth. Normally, we both work office jobs and do not get out much to see the natural beauty of the world. Yet, when we do, the vastness of it all makes us feel so lucky to be together and in love. We are amazed that in all the world, we found each other. So there could be no better place than on a pier in front of the huge expanse of ocean than to commit to each other completely.

The day before the wedding was filled with so much rain that we worried about things like bugs and damp smells. We wanted our guests to feel comfortable for the time that they were on the pier with us as well as when they retreated back to my grandmother's back lawn for the reception. Too many weather problems could make their experience more negative than great. I don't think I got any sleep that night worrying about it.

Finally, when the sun rose of the day of my wedding, the clouds in the sky just seemed to break and the sun shone through. The temperature was a warm May standard and all of the rain that could have lingered on the grass from the day before dried up. It was the most beautiful day of the whole year - just for my husband and I.

With the sun high ahead, seagulls flying and our closest friends and family crammed onto that pier with us, we said our vows and were married. The wind whipped the hair and veil around my face, just like in the movies and dried of the tears on my cheeks. I was so overcome with awe of the day that there was nothing more I could do than to just smile, let a few tears fall and let it be.

Getting married outdoors by the ocean was the most amazing experience. I truly felt empowered and filled with energy and hope. It was challenging for our friends and family to hear our vows, but my husband and I certainly heard them loud and clear.
