Choosing Your Wedding Cake
When choosing your wedding cake, it is important to note that more than the flavor, the style needs to be the number one priority. It is good news, as well, that most styles of cakes can come in a variety of flavors and textures.
When choosing the style of cake, first decide how large you would like for it to be. Larger cakes are harder to store and tend to be more expensive than smaller cakes, but they are loaded with layers for your guests to enjoy. Plus, the larger the cake, the more design you can include on it.
Smaller cakes are elegant as well. However, the do not feed everyone, if you have a large wedding. Many couples enjoy selecting multiple cakes - both small and large, so that they can vary the design and vary the flavoring.
Be sure, especially when it is time to choose the flavoring, that you visit many cake makers for taste tests. When you taste the cake, you want to keep in mind that not only should the cake itself taste wonderful, but so should the icing.
If you have a cake with a lot of intricate design on it, then chances are good that the designer will use a hard icing rather than a soft icing. While both are delicious, many people have a strong preference for one or the other. Keep this in mind when selecting your icing and design. Do you really want your guests to bite into a hard wedding cake?
Because highly designed or large cakes can be rather expensive, some people find that they prefer to either choose a very small professional cake, or to simply make the cake on their own. If you make the cake on your own, practice baking it well in advance of the wedding.
You can build in layers and designs without much effort, but it would be worth your while to do some research into how other people go at it alone. Know how to join the layers so that the structure of the cake is reinforced. As always, over estimate the amount of icing that you will need. There is nothing more amateur than running out of icing before the cake is finished.
Finally, after the wedding, many brides and grooms choose to package a portion of their cake to enjoy on the honeymoon. Be sure to take some Tupperware for this purpose. Alternatively, you can ask the cake manufacturer to set aside cupcake size portions of cake for you to take with you after the wedding.
Most of all, your cake should reflect your personality. Make it fun, strong and pulled together!
